Welcome to Paws and Boots on the Ground!

Our mission to empower youth through innovative dog training and build therapy-dog teams was born out of our belief that the human–canine bond has unique potential. By pairing youth with screened pet dogs that we like to call Pet Paws, we open a door to personal growth, community connection, and even future career pathways.

When we first imagined Paws and Boots on the Ground, we knew it had to be more than just another youth program, we wanted something that would spark real change in both young lives and the community. The idea came from a simple but powerful truth: when we give young people purpose, support, and a chance to belong, we help them find confidence, meaning, and a path forward. And when we connect that with the unconditional loyalty and joy of dogs, the result can be transformative.

Why dogs?

Because they teach lessons humans sometimes struggle to learn on their own. Dogs respond to patience, respect, and kindness. They give unconditional support. For a young person who might be feeling lost, unheard, or unsure about their future, building a relationship with a dog and learning how to guide that dog, can foster empathy, responsibility, and leadership. We saw dogs as a bridge: a bridge between youth and community, between challenge and opportunity, between uncertainty and purpose.

At its heart, Paws and Boots on the Ground is about offering young people more than guidance. It’s about offering purpose, belonging, and the chance to make a real impact. Through our training programs, we give youth a safe, supportive environment where they can learn, try, fail and succeed, all while caring for and training a dog. As they grow in confidence and competence, many discover a passion or talent they never knew they had.

But the ripple effect goes beyond the individual. Every dog trained becomes a potential therapy dog, ready to bring education, healing, and comfort to members of the community including seniors, children, people facing hardship and  anyone who might benefit from support or connection. In this way, our program doesn’t just build stronger youth, it builds a stronger, kinder, more connected community.

We started this program because we believe in possibility. We believe young people deserve more than temporary programs, they deserve real chances to grow, to learn, to contribute, to belong. And we believe in the power of dogs to help unlock that potential. By investing in youth and harnessing the magic of the human-canine bond, we’re creating therapy-dog teams, fostering leadership, and building brighter futures for everyone involved.

In short: we began Paws and Boots on the Ground because we saw a need. A need for purpose, connection, healing, and growth and a way to answer it. Through patience, compassion, guidance, and paws on the ground, we’re proving that when you give young people the chance to care, connect, and contribute, they don’t just grow. They thrive.
